Learn all you can about your legislator before your meeting
Knowing how your legislator stands on the issues as well as how he or she votes is key to preparing for your meeting and generating the action you want.
Be sure to know prior to your meeting:
- How has he/she voted on the issue in the past?
- Is he/she a co-sponsor of current legislation?
- Which issues is he or she particularly interested in?
- Do you personally know your legislator or do you have colleagues that do?
- What is your legislator's professional background or biographical history?
Staff members are important
In many cases, your legislator's staff may know as much or more about an issue than the legislator. They can be a valuable resource in delivering your message.
Be prepared to discuss the issues
- Read the Academy's issue briefs and talking points.
- Contact Academy staff with any questions you have regarding the issue(s) you plan to discuss.
- Choose one or two issues to focus on. Bring a copy of the summary points to leave with the legislator and his/her staff after the meeting.
- Remember to thank your legislator and his/her staff for their votes or support on key issues.
Helpful Hints
- Don't be late. Legislators have tight schedules.
- Dress appropriately. This is a business meeting.
- Bring your business cards and a camera.
- Wear your SkinPAC pin.
- Ask for your legislator's position on your issue at the end of the meeting.
- Send your legislator and his/her staff a thank you letter following your meeting, emphasizing the key points discussed.
